Whyalla Feedlot

Whyalla Feedlot is owned by Nippon Meat Packers Australia and is recognised as the largest feedlot operating within Australia . The current feedlot was established in 1989 incorporating state of the art technology including a steam flaking plant for grain processing. The Whyalla property covers around 5,800 hectares and produces corn silage, lucerne hay and feeder steers for the feedlot.

During their feeding period at Whyalla cattle are handled to minimise stress. Shade facilities have been erected across all pens to alleviate heat stress in summer periods. A regular pen-cleaning program is utilised to ensure that cattle have free access in pens and can move about without restriction. Pens have been designed to prevent bruising to cattle and to allow ready access to feed and water.

Whyalla Feedlot is proactive in managing the environment it operates within. All runoff and effluent from the feedlot is contained within two separate storage systems. Solid effluent is also contained after removal from cattle pens. These resources are then utilised to improve production in Whyalla's farming areas. Liquid effluent is used to irrigate forage crops and manure is used as a fertiliser for pasture and crop areas. Computerised weather stations are located throughout the feedlot and are used to monitor environmental conditions within the feedlot. Whyalla must comply with both Ausmeat and Queensland Government operating procedures that are reviewed annually in order to continue operation.

We are 24 km north west of Texas in Queensland on the Yelarbon rd.

Dumaresq Grazing

‘Dumaresq Grazing Services' is the hub of Oakey Holdings breeding operations from its conception in 1996. Through experimentation, trial and error, changing technologies and market conditions, DGS has established itself at the frontier of our breeding programs.

Total management control from sire, cow, livestock husbandry practices and supplemented ration control has developed the DGS breeding program to be a yet simple but sophisticated production system targeting overseas customer demands. All calves are JAS accredited having whole of life management records.

Cattle Creek

Located west of Toowoomba near Cecil Plains in the western Darling Downs, ‘Cattle Creek' was purchased by Oakey Holdings in 2000.

Since that time ‘Cattle Creek' has established improved pastures to enable the 6,800 ha property to breed from 1200 head Angus cows. Being a terminal cow herd, replacement heifers are supplied from ‘Scheelite' King Island . Select Wagyu sires are used for progeny performance evaluation joining groups throughout the year. Early weaned calves are introduced to a controlled grower feedlot ration targeting turnoff weights at 12 months of age for a feedlot finisher program. All calves are JAS compliant having whole of life traceability.

Scheelite

King Island is located mid way between Melbourne and Tasmania in Bass Strait and is a highly productive perennial grassland developed from historical soldier settler programs.

The 2800 ha ‘Scheelite' farm was purchased in June 2001 and is located in the SE corner of King Island where it receives over 1,000 mm of highly reliable rainfall each year.

The ‘Scheelite' herd is a 2500 head self replacing commercial line of Australian Angus cows. Sires are bred and purchased from Angus Society members using breed plan technology seeking above average birth, 600 day and IMF values. Calves will feed up to 14 months of age before shipping off the island to either custom feed on long fed rations or background to feedlot entry weight at the Oakey Holdings ‘Walla Wallah' Forbes farm in NSW.

Wallah Wallah

The Forbes district is well renowned for its horticultural and pastoral diversity from its temperate inland climate and rich riverina alluvial soils. Forbes supports a large livestock selling facility attracting interstate buyers and competitive market conditions.

Purchased in 1993 as a back grounding centre for Oakey Holdings, ‘Walla Wallah' is located along the Lachlan river and has been

developed to a highly improved 1600 ha irrigation farm, licensed with a 2500 mgl bore of highly reliable ground water.

The ‘Walla Wallah' farm has been sown down to improved perennial summer pastures and has the capacity to pre-condition 1700 head of steers ready for feedlot entry. A spring cash cropping program complements the on-going pasture improvement program and provides enterprise and management diversity. Back ground steers can be sourced from within the company or purchased from outside, targeting the long fed segment of the feedlot market.
